New to Springfield? Why Renting Weekly Can Beat Buying a Car Right Away
People land in the Springfield area for all kinds of reasons: a new job, school at Missouri State, family, or a fresh start. A lot of them hit the same wall in week one. The Springfield area is spread out, and getting around without a car is hard. The quick fix seems to be buying one. I'm Robert, and I'm building Drive 417, a weekly car rental business in the Springfield area. I want to make the case for slowing down.
Why rushing a car purchase can backfire
When you are new, you are under pressure. You need to get to work Monday. That is exactly when people take a loan with a high rate, skip an inspection, or buy something too big or too thirsty for their daily driving. A few weeks of breathing room can change all of that.
What you learn in your first month here
Give yourself a month and you will know things you cannot know on day one:
- Your real commute. Living on the edge of the metro and working downtown is a different drive than living near campus.
- The small towns around Springfield. Nixa, Ozark, Republic, Battlefield and the other towns around the metro each have their own feel, housing and drive times. A month of exploring shows you which one fits before you sign a home lease or buy a car.
- Your work pattern. If you pick up gig or delivery shifts, you will learn which parts of town and which hours fit your life.
- Your budget. Your housing costs and utilities settle out. Then you know what car payment you can really carry.
- Winter. Ozarks winters bring snow and ice some years, mostly December through February. You will see what you actually need.
When a weekly rental makes sense
A weekly rental fits well if:
- You just moved and are still choosing where to live
- Your own car is in the shop or was totaled
- You are trying out gig work before committing to a vehicle
- You are here for a set stretch, such as a contract job or a semester
Weekly terms mean you are not locked into years of payments while you figure things out.
What Drive 417 is building
We are a small, local rental business focused on people who drive for work. Here is the plan:
- Midsize gas sedans in the Camry, Corolla, Accord, and Civic class
- Rent is paid weekly on Fridays
- No trip minimums. You may use the car with any major delivery or rideshare app, subject to that app's own driver, vehicle and insurance rules. We cannot promise any app will accept you or the car.
- Clear, written terms before you sign
- Renters must be 25 or older, with a valid US driver's license held at least 1 year
- Rent paid by Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App (business)
- Handover at a public location in the Springfield area
- Every car is insured before handover, and we handle scheduled oil changes. Renters must also carry their own personal auto insurance and show proof before handover.
- Only the named renter may drive. No smoking or pets.

A quick note on getting around in the meantime
If you are flying in, Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF) has a free Cell Phone Lot for people picking up arriving passengers, so a friend or family member can wait there until you land. City bus service is available through City Utilities of Springfield; check their current routes before you plan around them.
Where we are today
Nothing is available to rent yet, and I won't pretend otherwise. If you are moving here this winter, or just know you will need a car soon, joining the waitlist now means you will hear about next steps when cars are ready. It is free and does not commit you to anything. Join the waitlist and apply here.
