How Old Do You Have to Be to Rent a Car in Missouri?

I'm Robert, and I'm building Drive 417, a small, local weekly car rental business in the Springfield area. One of the first questions people ask me is simple: "Am I old enough to rent?" The honest answer is that it depends on the company, and the place to find it is the rental agreement. Let's walk through how to check.

Who sets the age rule?

In practice, each rental company sets its own minimum age and writes it into its rental agreement. That is why you can hear different answers in different places. One counter may say 21, another may say 25. The rule that applies to you is the one in the agreement you sign.

So before you compare prices, ask every company the same question: "What is your minimum age, and is it written in the agreement?" If they cannot show you, keep asking until they can.

General information only, not legal advice.

Why companies set different ages

Rental companies set age rules mostly around insurance and risk. Younger drivers often pay more for insurance on their own cars, and rental businesses face a similar issue. Some companies respond with a higher minimum age. Others allow younger drivers but add a surcharge or limit which cars they can rent.

When you compare options, look at the full picture:

  • The minimum age to rent at all
  • Any added fee for drivers under a certain age
  • Which vehicles younger drivers can choose
  • Whether extra drivers on the agreement must meet the same age

Ask for the full written terms before you commit.

What age does Drive 417 require?

Drive 417 renters must be 25 or older. That is one clear rule, and it is our rental policy.

We are building Drive 417 for people who drive for work, plus folks who need a car for a few weeks. You may use the car with any major delivery or rideshare app, subject to that app's own driver, vehicle and insurance rules. We cannot promise any app will accept you or the car. We have no trip minimums. The plan is midsize gas sedans in the Camry, Corolla, Accord, and Civic class, rented on weekly terms.

Other things you will need besides age

Age is only one piece. Most weekly rentals, including ours, will look at:

  • A valid US driver's license held at least 1 year.
  • Only the named renter may drive.
  • Your Missouri driving record, which we pull ourselves with your signed consent. A DUI, reckless driving, or license suspension in the last 3 years means we cannot approve the rental.
  • A way to pay rent weekly on Fridays by Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App (business).
  • Clear, written terms that you review before you sign.
  • A completed application. No credit check.

If you do gig or delivery work, remember that each service sets its own rules for drivers and vehicles. Those rules can include their own age limits. Check the service's current requirements before you apply anywhere, because a rental company cannot change them for you.

Insurance and maintenance

Every car is insured before handover. Renters must also carry their own personal auto insurance and show proof before handover. Drive 417 handles oil changes every 5,000 miles, tows for breakdowns you did not cause, and road-hazard flats. Coverage details are in the lease.
